City of Bristol Choir is a mixed voice choir of around 100 auditioned adult singers, which sings a wide range of choral music in concerts in Bristol and around the South West.

City of Bristol Choir has appeared on BBC television’s Songs of Praise and BBC Radio 2’s Sunday Half Hour. The choir has toured Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy and Belgium. City of Bristol Choir’s debut CD, Realms of Glory, was released in 2013, a brilliant collection of choral classics and contemporary works.

The choir’s size gives it flexibility to perform music in diverse styles, from intimate Renaissance polyphony and partsongs to large scale works with orchestra.

The choir was formed in 1991 by Malcolm Archer. The choir now enjoys a busy schedule of concerts and events under the direction of David Ogden, who was appointed Director of Music in 2000.

Performance highlights include a performance of Elgar’s Dream of Gerontius with City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in 2007, an appearance on BBC television’s Songs of Praise and performing David Ogden’s Cabot Circus Cantata, an arts project created as part of the multi-million pound Cabot Circus development in central Bristol.

Recent seasons have included performances of Walton’s Belshazzar’s Feast, Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 with His Majesty’s Sagbutts and Cornetts, Britten’s War Requiem, Symanowski’s Stabat Mater, Dove’s There Was A Child and For An Unknown Soldier, Mozart’s Requiem and Mass in C Minor, and Howells’ Hymnus Paradisi.

As a registered charity, City of Bristol Choir provides bursaries for four or five young people annually and, where necessary, subsidises orchestral concerts to help keep ticket prices low.
