BBC Music Day

Friday 5 June 2015

We were honoured to be part of the first ever BBC Music Day at Bristol's Colston Hall on Friday 5 June, one of only eight UK venues selected by the BBC to play host for the event.

This unique day was a nationwide celebration of music and featured live music events and performances across the country, with broadcasts on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 3, BBC 6 Music, Asian Network, BBC Local Radio, BBC One’s The One Show and online at www.bbc.co.uk/musicday

Colston Hall was chosen for the leading role it is taking in championing disability and diversity in music and the arts. BBC Music Day saw the Hall welcoming a unique special educational needs and disability youth concert.

Performing with custom built instruments using new assistive technology, children from the South West Open Youth Orchestra performed alongside members of the British Paraorchestra, City of Bristol Choir and South West youth choirs including Bristol Youth Choir, Elmfield Signing Choir and Hope Choir in a daytime celebration led the conductors Charles Hazlewood and David Ogden. Paul Whittaker OBE, Music and the Deaf founder, led the signing.

A live performance ran between 3.00pm and 4.00pm, concluded by Inner Vision Orchestra soprano Victoria Oruwari in a collaboration with the British Paraorchestra and Bristol Youth Choir to perform the renowned True Colours, in the first concert of its kind.

Organised by Bristol Plays Music – the music education hub for Bristol based at Colston Hall – BBC Music Day preluded the first ever Fast Forward Festival on 2nd & 3rd July, which aims to celebrate and challenge the perception of music and disability.

J.S. Bach: St John Passion

Sunday 11th March 2012 at 7.30pm

The St John Passion is the most personal and meditative of Bach's Passion settings, telling the Easter story in music of simple beauty and power. Christ's final days are dramatized with real intimacy, centred on the Evangelist who narrates the story in the words of the gospel. In this bilingual performance, the words of the Evangelist will be sung in English providing clarity and heightening the drama. Arias and chorales in the original German provide reflections throughout.
