St George's, Bristol

City of Bristol Choir
Conducted by David Ogden
With Juliet McCarthy cello

JS Bach Komm, Jesu, Komm
Bob Chilcott Advent Antiphons
JS Bach Lobet den Herrn
John Tavener Mother of God, here I stand, from The Veil of the Temple
John Tavener Hymn to the Mother of God
John Tavener The Lamb

As the run up to Christmas approaches, come and enjoy some beautiful and atmospheric choral music written for the season of Advent. In the candlelit ambience of St George's, City of Bristol Choir presents a concert of music by Bach and contemporary British composers – John Tavener and Bob Chilcott, conducted by David Ogden.

The music of John Tavener is peaceful and mesmerising. Bob Chilcott's Advent Antiphons build on plainsong melodies to create wonderfully rich, sonorous textures, perfectly suited to the very special acoustic of St George's. Cellist Juliet McCarthy joins the choir to play a movement from Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time, and continuo in J.S. Bach's motets Komm, Jesu, Komm and Lobet den Herrn.

How to find St George's, Bristol

Directions

St George's Bristol is located in Bristol's West End, just off Park Street. The building is a former church building, situated on the side of a hill. Access is via Great George Street (Box Office entrance), or Charlotte Street (top entrance, dedicated disabled access).

From the M4

Exit at J19, taking the M32 into Bristol.

Stay on the M32 until the end (Newfoundland Street), keeping in the 2nd lane from the right.

At the traffic lights follow the road right into Bond Street and move into the middle lane (next to the bus lane).

Take 1st exit from roundabout (Debenhams and House of Fraser will be on your left) and follow the main road until you get to Colston Avenue/City Centre. Once on the centre, get into the right lane, following signs to Park Street. You will pass the Hippodrome on your right.

Go up the short hill (the Marriott Royal Hotel, College Green and Bristol Cathedral will be on your left), and once on Park Street (steep hill, with shops either side), turn off at the 2nd road on the left, called Great George Street. It is signposted 'St George's Bristol'.

St George's Bristol is a former church which you will find on your right, with steep steps leading up to the column lined front.

From the A4/A37

Stay on the A37 passing Bristol Temple Meads railway station on your right, and follow the dual carriageway towards the city centre.

At St James Barton roundabout, go straight across (either by taking the second exit at the roundabout, or by taking the underpass beneath it). At the traffic lights follow the road straight ahead (keeping the shops on your left) staying in the middle lane, next to the bus lane.

From the M5

If travelling from the North, take the M4 from the interchange, and come into Bristol on the M32 as above.

If travelling from the South, come off at Gordano Services, following signs to Clifton/Bristol.

As you near the city, take the left turning via the Clifton Suspension Bridge (you will need 50p in silver coins for the bridge toll).

Once over the bridge, turn right at the first mini-roundabout, and take the first turning left after the zebra-crossing (Merchant Road). Follow this road until you reach the one-way system (you will see Habitat opposite you).

Follow the system past the front of the shops and stay in the middle lane, forking right into Park Street at the third set of traffic lights. Once descending Park Street, take the second right into Great George Street. It is signposted 'St George's Bristol'.
