A feast of exuberant and stirring English music performed by an 80-strong choir and full orchestra.

Two choral gems by Vaughan Williams take centre stage: his youthful setting of inspirational and uplifting words by Walt Whitman in Toward The Unknown Region and his rarely-performed work Benedicite. This spirited hymn in praise of creation sets brilliant choral fanfares against exquisitely reflective passages for solo soprano.

In 2016, the Bristol-based composer David Bednall was commissioned to write a setting of the Nunc Dimittis to complement Finzi’s Magnificat. City of Bristol Choir has now commissioned him to orchestrate the Nunc Dimittis, and this concert sees the first performance of the fully-orchestrated works side by side.

Holst’s intensely moving and mystical Hymn of Jesus completes the programme.
