Rheinberger Hymne: Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen

A celebratory concert marking the 150th anniversary of All Saintsí Church, Clifton and the 100th birthday of one of Americaís greatest conductors and composers, Leonard Bernstein. His compositions range from symphonies to musicals and are famed for their vitality, jazzy rhythms and plaintive, heartfelt melodies. The Chichester Psalms has all these elements in abundance. In three contrasting movements conveying messages of joy, peace, humility and goodwill, Bernstein fuses the choir and organís vibrancy and power with the harpís delicate and ethereal sounds, together with the rhythmic drive of drums and percussion.

The mystical and engaging combination of these varied colours from choir, organ and harp are also heard in JanŠcekís restful setting of the Lordís Prayer and in the rarely-heard Hymne: Wie lieblich sind deine Wohnungen for ladies' voices by the 19th century composer Josef Rheinberger.

The choir gives the first performance of a new work for menís choir by the young composer Amy Summers, one of this yearís City of Bristol Choir Scholars, and the final two works of the programme set vivid and passionate words by 17th century poets: Finziís wonderful melodious festival anthem Lo, the full, final sacrifice, and the dramatic cantata Crucifixus pro nobis by the Yorkshire-born composer Kenneth Leighton.

Tickets are £15 for adults, £5 for students in full time education and under 18s.
